New Unit on Percents Begins!
Our quick Proportions unit recently closed, just prior to the end of Trimester 2. As we venture into the final trimester of the school year, we will closely study the topic of Percents. We will discuss Percent of Increase and Decrease, including discounts, markups, commission, sales tax, and profit. We will also learn about interest rates and how this applies to our everyday lives.
MESA in ActionRJJH MESA students performed exceedingly well at our last Saturday Academy, held on December 3, 2011 at CSU, Fresno. Students represented both RJJH and Kingsburg wonderfully! A special congratulations go to 7th grader, Hena Sihota, who placed 2nd in the Solo Math competition for Pre-Algebra. Sixth graders, Jake Goodbar and Derrick Hirschfield placed 1st and 2nd, respectively, in the Solo Math competition for General Math. All three of these students earned a spot in the MESA Day Regional Competition, to be held on April 21st at UC, Santa Barbara. Great work!
A number of other Rafer students placed well in engineering competitions at the Saturday Academy. Israel Sahagun earned a 1st place medal for his Earthquake Tower; our LEGO Robotics team of Madison Lewis, Jessica Emerzian, Jacob Ramirez, and Henry Wildes came in 1st place for their robot obstacle course run; Egg Crash Test winners were Macey Hammerstrom & Hena Sihota, who came in 2nd, and Jas Sohal and Evelyn Serrano, who came in 3rd; Derek Radley also came in 3rd place for his "Shooting Beans" trebuchet performance. We look forward to hearing about future successes of our MESA students at the final Saturday Academy on February 25, 2012, as well as at the MESA Day Preliminary Competition, which will be held at Fresno State on March 10, 2012. |
